How did crossword_bot determine "top guessers?"
The top guessers for each year are the top 20 players whose guesses received the most "endorsements" in that year. The endorsements were calculated as follows:
- When an original guess for a clue is entered for the first time, it has an endorsement count of zero.
- When another player makes the same guess for the same clue, the original guess' endorsement goes up by one.
- When the original guesser enters the same guess for the same clue again, it is ignored, and the endorsement count stays the same.
- If another player who had already guessed the same enters the guess again, the endorsement count for the original guess stays the same.
- In short, the endorsement count is the number of players other than the original guesser who subsequently guesses the same for the clue.
- When comparing guesses, case, spacing, and punctuation are ignored. 'NEW YORK' is considered to be the same guess as 'new york', 'Newyork', and 'nEwY. OrK.'
- Every game day starts from a clean slate. Guess submissions from one day cannot endorse guesses from other days.
- Total endorsements a player receives during a game is the sum of all the endorsements the guesses for which the player was the first to enter received.
What does "contributed at least 50 guesses" mean?
All guesses that were not repeats for that player were counted. For example, if player A guessed 'Apple' for 20D for the first time during a game, that guess was counted as a guess even if player B had guessed 'Apple' for 20D before player A did. If player A guessed '20D Apple' again, that wasn't counted. All players who had contributed at least 50 guesses that met these conditions over the time crossword_bot tracked the guesses were included.
Limitations
The records only go back to late 2016. There were many games where the guesses were not recorded because either the crossword_bot malfunctioned or the show schedules were changed.
